What to Expect at Your First Mobile Dog Grooming Appointment

If you've never used a mobile groomer before, it's completely normal to have questions. What exactly happens in the van? How long does it take? Do you need to be home? What should you do to prepare your dog?
We hear these questions all the time from first-time clients across Northern Virginia, and we're happy to walk you through exactly what to expect from start to finish. The short version: it's a lot simpler and more convenient than most people expect.
Before the Appointment
Booking is straightforward: You can reach us by phone or through our contact form to schedule your appointment. We'll ask about your dog's breed, coat condition, and any sensitivities or health concerns we should know about before we go in. This helps us prepare and make sure the appointment goes smoothly.
You don't need to do much to prepare: You don't need to bathe your dog beforehand or do anything special to their coat. Just make sure your dog has had a chance to go to the bathroom before we arrive, and try to avoid feeding them a large meal right before the appointment. A light stomach makes the experience more comfortable for your dog.
Make sure we have a place to park: Our grooming van needs access to a parking spot near your home, ideally in your driveway or directly in front of your house. We're self-contained, meaning we bring our own water and power, so you don't need to provide anything.
When We Arrive
When the van pulls up, you'll bring your dog out to meet us. We'll do a quick meet-and-
greet to let your dog get comfortable before the groom begins. For dogs that are nervous or have had difficult grooming experiences in the past, this moment is important. We take it at your dog's pace.
We'll do a brief coat assessment before starting to confirm the service and flag anything that might affect the groom, such as matting, skin irritation, or areas your dog is particularly sensitive about. This is a good time to mention anything specific you'd like us to pay attention to or any styles you prefer.
Once your dog is comfortable and we've confirmed the plan, the groom begins.
During the Groom
This is where mobile grooming really sets itself apart from a traditional salon experience. Your dog is the only dog in the van. There's no waiting in a kennel between steps, no other animals creating noise and stress, and no long hold times. The entire appointment is dedicated to your dog from start to finish.
Depending on the service you've booked, the groom will typically include a warm bath with premium shampoo and conditioner, a blow-dry and brush-out, ear cleaning, nail trimming, and any haircut or styling that's part of your package. You can find the full details of what's included in each service on our services page.
Most appointments take between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, depending on your dog's size, coat type, and the service booked. You don't need to stand by the van the entire time. Most clients go back inside, and we'll knock or give you a call when we're wrapping up.
After the Groom
When the groom is complete, we'll bring your dog back to you. We'll let you know how the appointment went, mention anything we noticed during the groom, and answer any questions you have. If we notice any skin concerns, ear issues, or coat conditions worth keeping an eye on, we'll flag those for you so you can follow up with your vet if needed.
This kind of one-on-one feedback is something you rarely get from a busy salon.
Because we're focused entirely on your dog, we get to know their coat, skin, and temperament well over time.
What Makes Mobile Grooming Different
If you've only ever used a traditional grooming salon, the difference is noticeable from the very first appointment. Here's a quick comparison:
Traditional salon:
Drop your dog off and leave for several hours
Your dog waits in a kennel between steps
Multiple dogs are being groomed at the same time
Loud environment with dryers, barking, and unfamiliar animals
Limited feedback after the appointment
Mobile grooming with MobileDog:
We come to you, no drop-off or pickup required
No kennel time at any point
One-on-one attention from start to finish
Quiet, calm environment in a self-contained van
Direct conversation with your groomer before and after
For dogs with anxiety, older dogs, or dogs with health conditions, the mobile environment makes a significant difference in how they experience grooming. Many of our clients made the switch after their dog had a difficult experience at a traditional salon and never looked back.
Common First-Appointment Questions
Do I need to be home during the groom?
We recommend being available nearby, especially for your first appointment. You don't need to watch the whole groom, but it's helpful to be reachable in case we have any questions.
What if my dog has never been professionally groomed before?
First-time grooms can take a little longer as your dog gets used to the process. Let us know in advance, and we'll take a gentler, more patient approach to make the experience
as positive as possible.
What if my dog's coat is matted?
We'll assess the matting during our pre-groom check and talk you through the options. Mild matting can often be worked through during the groom. Severe matting may require a shorter cut to resolve it safely and comfortably.
Can I request a specific style?
Absolutely. Whether you have a breed standard in mind or a specific length you prefer, let us know, and we'll do our best to achieve it.
